For the Haunted House at the CEEO, our team decided to contribute a classic pop-up doll as part of our exhibit. Our project is a pirate skeleton that pops out of its coffin when somebody tries to take candy on top of the coffin.
We started off by discovering the best way to manipulate the skeleton so that it can pop-up at the audience when activated. In order to accomplish this, we attached four EV3 motors in its torso so that it can rotate fast enough to scare the audience, but also with enough power to lift the coffin door. We noticed that the coffin door was too heavy for the doll so we attached 2 motor to the door hinges attached with beams to lift the door before the skeleton rises from the dead. We daisy-chained the two EV3 bricks toghether to make this work. It also meant that the door movement was independant of the skeleton and hence it gave the whole setup a more "magical" look. The subwoofer also acted as a counterweight to the motors and the skeleton.
The skeleton is activated by removing a candy bar at the tip of the coffin, which is placed on top of a touch sensor. So once the program detects that the touch button is released, the coffin door is opened, the skeleton pops out and an audio file of Jack Sparrow’s scream plays.
